Salary Survey
The Electronics Weekly Salary Survey 2007 (request a copy here), sponsored by John Prodger Recruitment*, offers some interesting insights into the current trends in salaries in the sector.
In sponsoring the survey, we wanted to explore the complex range of benefits that candidates are being offered and to investigate the motivations that lead candidates to leave one employer and attract them to the next.
As 63% of the survey planned to change jobs in the next two years, the trends may indicate where successful HR professionals and recruiters should focus their efforts.
The 2007 survey highlights a number of key factors important for engineers when considering a role. Challenging and interesting work outstrips recognition, job security, freedom to make decisions and salary, as the most important factor in a role.
As recruitment consultants, we find that many engineers mention potential salary increases as the spur to starting their search for a new job, but a role that interests them technically is also key to the decision to attend for interview.
As a move becomes a real possibility the challenge, prospects and salary become more evenly matched. We are also seeing an increasing number of offers accepted or rejected for work/life balance reasons e.g. convenient location. This trend may also be reflected in the fact that flexitime is now the fourth most common benefit that our survey respondents receive after pension, health plans and performance related bonuses.
From an employer’s perspective, time and energy spent on smoothing the recruitment process and on explaining the technical challenges, career prospects and lifestyle oriented benefits of a role, should mean that high-calibre and motivated engineers can be recruited at competitive salary packages.
