To work on Mechanical design of Optical Instrumentation for the Space market

To strengthen the groups mechanical engineering capability. The role will involve all phases in the evolution of optical instrumentation.

Job Requirements

Mechanical Engineering Tasks: To develop robust working designs for optical system manufacture, assembly alignment and operation. Opto-mechanical system design, from creation of initial system architectural concept. Subsystem requirements definition, specification and interface management (internal and external). Complete manufacturing drawings to enable the designs to be manufactured. Undertake integration of the mechanical components in the clean rooms. Maintain a design log, summarising each step in the design, development & test process. Analysis Tasks: Undertake structural and thermal analysis at component and system level in collaboration with the Senior Mechanical Analyst. Work with the Senior Mechanical Analyst to develop the companies understanding of structural response and thermal design. General Tasks: Management of Work Packages, including identification and management of risk. Write reports for all phases of development activities. Plan test campaigns, conduct / manage tests, analyse and present results. Detailed project planning. Support manufacturing activities. Develop the Bill of Materials to allow the MRP system to reflect the completed spacecraft.

Qualifications: A good Degree in Mechanical Engineering Experience: Demonstrable relevant mechanical design experience, preferably in the high performance optics industry (space, astronomy or defence). Demonstrate experience of the design, build and test of opto-mechanical systems. Relevant experience in some or all of the following areas is essential: Opto-mechanical design. Materials and manufacturing processes. Precision engineering in harsh environments. Mechanical design using 3D CAD. Integration and test. FE analysis. Report writing. Costing and subcontracting. Customer liaison. Operation in a quality assured environment. Extensive experience of mechanical testing. Knowledge & Skills: Excellent understanding of engineering physics and analytical skills. Competent user of leading FEA package (ANSYS, Patran/Nastran or similar - ANSYS). Competent use of CAD (Solid Works or Similar). A good understanding of the principles of FEA. Confidence to solve stress, kinematics, vibration and thermal analysis problems from first principles and the ability to grasp new technical concepts quickly. Competent in Microsoft Office suite.
